Florida's rural regions and smaller counties need a state strategy for attracting jobs and commercial activity, without sacrificing their small-town flavor, says a new report by the state's economic-development agency.
And the state should consider the financial impact of prison closing and privatization on rural counties that have long depended on the Department of Corrections as a steady source of employment, said the study by Enterprise Florida. Last legislative session, the 37-member Small County Coalition mobilized with Jefferson County officials in a successful effort to prevent the closing of Jefferson Correctional Institution, when the DOC closed many other prisons due to declining inmate admissions.
