Most LobbyTools poll respondents clearly had their eyes on the hives when asked whether the state should prohibit local governments from regulating beekeepers despite concerns raised by cities and counties. SB 1132, sponsored by Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, would no longer allow local authorities to limit beekeeping only to areas zones for agriculture. Beekeepers say active hive management is needed in rural and suburban areas to prevent more aggressive Africanized honeybees from spreading in the state. The bill provides only for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to regulate beekeeping.
