Bill would kneecap red light camera revenue for local governments

A proposed transportation bill in the House would all but eliminate revenue for local governments from tickets issued to motorists running red lights who are caught by traffic cameras.

The bill, (THSS 14-01), would reduce the fine for such infractions from $158 to $83. The portion going to state coffers would be slashed from $100 to $70, and the $45 that now goes to cities and counties using the red light cameras would be eliminated. The rest of the fine would go to dedicated trust funds for emergency medical services and spinal cord injuries.
